Lake Otsego

Cooperstown is located at the southern end of Otsego Lake, known as "Glimmerglass" in James Fenimore Cooper's novels. This nine-mile long lake is significant for a number of reasons: It's the headwaters of the Susquehanna River and is the drinking water source for the Village of Cooperstown; the Clinton-Sullivan Campaign floated hundreds of barges down the river to get supplies to American troops during the Revolutionary War; the entire watershed for Otsego Lake is on the National Historic Register making The Glimmerglass Historic District the largest such protected district in the United States.

Otsego Lake is a glacial lake, it runs primarily north and south. It has a maximum depth of 160 feet. There is a very wide range of fish in the lake; salmon, trout, bass, pickeral, pike sunfish, and carp.

The lake is fed by a number of small tributaries and many fresh water springs.

A wide range of activities take place on the waters such as sailing, pleasure boating, swimming, canoeing and kayaking, water skiing and wake boarding and tubing, and fishing.

During the winter months, the ice can reach a thickness of over 2 feet. Many people explore the frozen lake by snowmobile, ice skates and cross country skiing. Ice fishing is also quite popular.
